Asus launched Transformer Prime in India. The tablet, which is first tablet in India to be powered by a quad-core processor, will be sold along with a keyboard dock that allows its user to ‘transform’ the device into a laptop.

The tablet and the dock will be available for Rs 49,999.

Prime is powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor. The chip features 4 main cores for computing-heavy workload and one auxiliary core to keep the tablet running in standby mode. Asus said that this arrangement allows the tablet to be more power efficient and its battery lasts longer.

The version of prime launched in India features 64GB internal storage. Its processor is clocked at 1.3Ghz. Transformer Prime features 1GB RAM and sports a 10-inches Super IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The primary camera can shoot 8 megapixel pictures. The front camera supports a resolution in 1.2MP. The tablet runs Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

The main feature of Prime is the keyboard dock. This dock adds a physical keyboard and touchpad as well as access to USB port, extra battery and SD card reader.

While acknowledging that Prime is a premium tablet, Alex Huang, managing director of Asus India, said that the company would soon launch other tablets. “We will cover all price points and will have tablets for everyone,” he said. Asus officials said that last year the company had 5% share in India’s tablet market. This year, the company wants to increase it to 20%.

The world’s cheapest tablet Aakash may soon be available on rent in college libraries with subject-wise video lectures in fields such as engineering, science and humanities pre-loaded on the low-cost tablet.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, which is piloting the 4,600-crore National Mission for Education, has offered the low-cost tablet to state governments at half the price. The move aims at encouraging the states to distribute Aakash free to college libraries, which can then give them out on rent to desiring students.

“The duration of rental can be decided by the college,” a government official said on condition of anonymity. “Ultimately, we want Aakash to reach all 220 million school and college students. But until then, we would have to find ways for its optimum utilisation.”

The government has distributed about 10,000 units of Aakash since its launch in 2010. The units, which are in the test phase, have been given to the students on an undertaking that they will return the units after using them for some months.

The Centre is now working on specifications of version 2.0 of the tablet that will have a capacitive touchscreen, such as the one in Apple’s iPad, and a processor with speed ranging from 800 MHz to 1 GHz.

A prototype of Aakash 2.0 has already been designed. A tender inviting tablet vendors for the next version is likely to be floated soon.

Students had complained of difficulties in running heavy applications on Aakash, which has a 366 MHz processor.

Both Acer and Lenovo are planning to launch windows 8 tablet middle of this year .The companies might announce the tablets at the Intel Developer Forum 2012 which is set to be held in San Francisco, USA from 9 September, 2012.

Acer and Lenovo will be first Windows 8 OS running tablet. Acer already had launched Windows 7 based tablet — Iconia Tab W500 while Lenovo had launched IdeaPad Tablet P1 with Windows 7 running on it.

Google Android based smartphones and/or tablets are expected to be unveiled at the Intel Developer Forum that will take place on 11-12 April in Beijing, China, else on 15th May at IDF scheduled in Sao Paulo, Brazil. These developments take place on the international scale so we won’t be surprised if India gets to see the first Windows 8 based tablet by the end of this year. Also it is too early to guess the pricing of these tablets but from the market trends, we can expect them to be competitively priced along-side the Android OS based tablets.
